This week I went on a little trip with my family and near where we were staying was a little town called Settle. For being quite a small town there was a lot of art shops and galleries. Settle was built around The Folly Museum, this is one of the first houses which was built in Settle and remains in excellent condition, with the same cobbled road running in front of it. When looking around this museum they had a section on farming, I found this part interesting at how the set out the room with physical object combined with photographs. It gave me something to think about, having some of the objects which is used alongside photographs being on show.
I then visited Gallery On the green I wasn’t too sure what to expect but when I saw it, it was far what I thought it would have been. I loved the idea that you can turn any space into a gallery, it was so inventive, using an old telephone box to show case artist work. The work in the telephone box was by Martian Parr.
Seeing gallery on the green showed me how you can still effectively present your work in a small space. The work which Martin Parr exhibited worked well being in the small space, his work was close-up shots of food. I feel if this work was in a bigger space you wouldn’t get the same feeling and intensity of the images, you get from being in the telephone box.
What I have taken from my visit to Settle is that I want to go back to visit the other galleries and art shops, but I have thought more about how to display my work:
Think about physical object not just photographs to exhibit.
Look at how much space you have and use it wisely. Look at how this will benefit you work.
